Finding Balance Through Better Habits

I realised… there was nothing I actually wanted to drink.

I was in a bar, 30 years into adult life, realising that not a single drink truly fit me anymore.
Wine felt heavy, gin was boring, cocktails too sugary, spritzers too flat.
I eat well and live well — yet I couldn’t find a drink made with fresh, clean ingredients and around 8% ABV.
There was nothing in bars, pubs, restaurants or supermarkets that met the lifestyle I wanted.
That frustration became the spark that started everything.

We bought every canned cocktail in Waitrose… and it was a disaster.

I explained my frustration to my husband — and he began his own research.
He bought every premade alcoholic can in Waitrose, and over a week we tried them all.
Some were hilarious, some disgusting, all dehydrating, bloating and hangover-inducing.
By the end we knew for certain: fresh, natural drinks simply didn’t exist in ready-made form.

A rare summer off turned into the summer we created everything.

By chance, it was the first summer in 30 years I’d taken time off.
It was HOT, Wimbledon was on, spritzers were everywhere in Europe, and Marlborough looked magical.
On walks, picnics, holidays and lazy afternoons we tested, boiled, strained, juiced and experimented.
The strawberry season was exceptional.
We learned so much — and slowly something beautiful began to form.

The recipe that changed everything - fresh, natural, and functional.

We perfected the Strawberry Spritz.
It included fresh strawberries, ginger, dates, basil and lavender-infused sparkling water — ticking every non-negotiable I had:
fresh flavour, nutrition, hydration and a gentle after-taste.
It tasted incredible because of the time and care it took to make.
The only downside: it wasn’t quick. But it proved something important — drinking better was possible.

I didn’t want to quit drinking; I wanted to drink beautifully.

I realised the deeper truth: I didn’t want to give up alcohol.
I wanted the ritual, the treat, the community, the joy - without the self-punishment.
Drinking is tied to celebrations, heartbreaks, dinners, weddings, friendships, tough days and great nights.
I want the tipsy, happy sweet spot - not the blackout or the hangover.
The glass matters. The moment matters. The people matter.
I just needed a better way to drink.

If I’m going to drink, I need to support my body, not sabotage it.

Life isn’t balanced — life is chaos.
So I rewired how I drink:
greens at breakfast, supplements at lunch, protein before alcohol, NAC, hydration, banana + protein at bedtime, and daily movement.
These tiny shifts changed everything.
They let me enjoy drinking and wake up feeling good.

I wrote a list of my non-negotiables and built drinks around them.

I realised that if I want to drink without compromising my health, the drink itself must meet certain standards:
natural ingredients only, no artificial flavourings, functional ingredients that help the body,
under 8% ABV, and added hydration.
Plus lifestyle goals: good sleep, no hangovers, steady energy, healthy weight.
This wasn’t about punishment; it was about joyful moderation. Small shifts. Big results.

A local Spritz Club and the birth of our community.

I needed taste-testers, so I formed a Spritz Club with women in my local village.
They were patient, honest, supportive and brilliant.
As No41 grows, I want to invest 10% of profits back into these women, spa days, trips, experiences, joy.
Because this brand is built on real connection.

This journey is rooted in real kitchens, pubs, walks, conversations.

My village community shaped everything.
We test drinks around kitchen tables, in the pub, on long walks, at school gates.
I’m planning collaborations with the local pub, events for mothers, and spaces to talk honestly about drinking well.
This is about shared experience, laughter, and a healthier approach to alcohol — together.

Life isn’t balanced...but drinking can be.

I follow the Glucose Goddess method to stabilise blood sugar, ease stress on the body, and support drinking in a healthy way.
My rules:
vinegar water + greens first thing, hydrate all day, eat protein before alcohol, take magnesium + B vitamins, electrolytes before bed, 10k steps a day.
These small, simple habits make drinking fit seamlessly into a joyful, healthy lifestyle.
